Maitland Fire Department names new chief

The Maitland Fire Rescue Department has officially named its new chief, the seventh in the department’s 97-year history.

Chris Morton was selected to become the full-time chief of the department this week, replacing Chief Will Watts ho retired on Thursday.

Morton, who was promoted from deputy Deputy Chief, started his career as a firefighter in Maitland in September 2002. The department currently employs 43 firefighters and three staff positions across two fire stations.

“I am proud to welcome Chief Morton to this senior leadership position within the city of Maitland,” said Interim City Manager Mark Reggentin. “Chris has grown within the agency to become a trusted team member who will lead with honor, dedication, professionalism and wisdom.”

In 2007, Morton was promoted to engineer and in 2009, he was promoted to lieutenant. In 2013, he became a battalion chief before becoming assistant/deputy chief in 2019.
