71-year-old critical after hit-and-run exiting SR 408

A 71-year-old woman is in critical condition after she was pulled from a flaming vehicle that was struck by another vehicle before it overturned and caught fire.

The accident took place on Chickasaw Trail, near State Road 408 on Sunday, June 4, at around 10:53 a.m.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the woman, who is from Haines City, was driving a 2016 Subaru Forester eastbound on SR 408 when she began to exit at Chickasaw Trail. Witnesses say that as the woman was exiting, she ran a red traffic light at the intersection of the roads while attempting to make a left turn to travel northbound on Chickasaw Trail.

The woman failed to negotiate the turn while turning left and the rear of her vehicle was struck by an unknown vehicle that was traveling south through the intersection on a green traffic light.

The impact caused the woman to lose control of the vehicle, run off the roadway, strike a curb, continue onto the sidewalk, and collide with a guardrail. The vehicle was then redirected in a northerly direction where it overturned.

Witnesses pulled the woman out of the vehicle before it became engulfed in flames. She was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center with critical injuries.

After the initial collision, the driver of the unknown vehicle continued traveling southbound on Chickasaw Trail. A witness told police that the vehicle was a smaller white sedan, but no additional details were provided. The vehicle would have sustained damage to the left front of the headlight.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 407-737-2213 or the Central Florida Crimeline at 800-423-8477.
