Two accused of carjacking, shooting victim trying to escape car in downtown Orlando

Two individuals have been arrested for allegedly carjacking a victim and shooting him when he tried to escape the vehicle as they were driving him to downtown Orlando.

According to the Orlando Police Department, 30-year-old Kevin Luke Johnson and 26-year-old Dekayla Gray were arrested on Monday for multiple felony charges related to the incident, including attempted first-degree murder.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting at the intersection of East Central Boulevard and Rosalind Avenue at around 2 p.m. on Monday.

Upon arrival, police found an adult male victim who was suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. The victim was transported to an area hospital in stable condition.

During the ensuing investigation, violent crimes detectives found that the victim had agreed to meet with Johnson and Gray at the Rosemont Community Center. Once the victim arrived to the center, the suspects allegedly held him at gunpoint and demanded money.

The victim alleges that after he told Gray and Johnson that he did not have money, they forced him into his vehicle and drove him downtown.

When the group reached the area of Central Boulevard and Rosalind Avenue, the victim attempted to jump out of the vehicle and escape.

According to police, a fight ensued, and the victim was shot while attempting to run away.

In addition to first-degree murder, Gray and Johnson face charges of armed carjacking and shooting into an occupied vehicle. Both are currently being held at the Orange County Jail.
