Thief fake scanning items at Walmart self-checkout escapes through service area

A man who was caught pretending to scan items in a self-checkout lane before he was asked by a Walmart associate to change lanes, is wanted by authorities after he allegedly fled through the service area in the back of the store without paying for hundreds of dollars of merchandise.

According to the Sanford Police Department, the man featured in this story was seen entering the Walmart located at 1601 Rinehart Road in Sanford on October 26, 2023.

After he loaded his cart with items, the man went to the self-checkout register and “acted like he was scanning the merchandise,” according to SPD.

A Walmart associate approached the man and asked him to move to a manned register for assistance.

The man refused and, instead, walked to the service area in the back of the store. There, he loaded the merchandise into a silver, Ford sport utility vehicle.
