One killed, four seriously injured after driver attempts pass in no passing zone

One person was killed, and four others were seriously injured after a driver attempted to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone and crashed head-on into oncoming traffic.

The fatal accident took place on Sunday, November 19, at around 10 p.m., according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 26-year-old Lakeland man was driving a 2019 Chrysler Sebring northbound on U.S. Hwy 17-91/S Orange Blossom Trail, just south of Sundown Drive. The driver attempted to pass a vehicle in a no-passing zone and entered the southbound travel lane of the highway.

The vehicle entered the direct path of a 2022 Toyota Corolla when the driver of the Sebring attempted to reenter the northbound lane.

As a result, the driver failed to maintain control of the Sebring and the left side of the vehicle struck the front of the Corolla.

After the impact, the Sebring traveled in a northeasterly direction off the roadway and and the Corolla traveled in a southwesterly direction off the roadway.

One passenger in the Sebring, a 26-year-old woman from Lakeland, was killed in th crash.

The driver of the Sebring, as well as two other Lakeland men in the vehicle, were transported to Osceola Regional Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the Corolla, a 30-year-old Kissimmee man, was also seriously injured in the crash.
