Suspect in fatal shooting arrested by DeLand Police

The DeLand Police Department has located and arrested a suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred early Saturday morning.

According to DPD, at around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, officers responded to a residence located in the 200 block of W Haven Road due to a report of a suspicious man hiding in the backyard. Upon arrival, officers located the man, identified as 22-year-old Edgar Martinez-Hernandez, on the side of the home.

The police department stated that Martinez-Hernandez matched the description of the shooting suspect, and a loaded firearm was allegedly found in his possession.

Martinez-Hernandez was arrested without incident and transported to Volusia County Jail. He is a suspect in a deadly shooting that occurred near the intersection of W Beresford Avenue and S Parsons Avenue on Saturday morning.

At around 3:50 a.m., DPD officers were dispatched to the intersection after receiving reports that someone had been shot in the area. Upon arrival, they located a victim in the roadway who had sustained a gunshot wound.

The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene. Their identity has not been released by DeLand police.

DPD detectives believed that the suspect was last seen wearing black shoes, black pants, a white shirt, and carrying a black backpack. Detectives added that the suspect was last seen entering the Sha-De-Land Mobile Home Park located at 1100 S Woodland Boulevard.

Martinez-Hernandez, the suspect in this homicide case, is currently being held at Volusia County Jail without bond. As of Sunday morning, he has been charged with possession of a weapon by an in-state felon.

“This is an active and ongoing criminal investigation,” stated the DeLand Police Department. “More details will be released as they become available.”
