100-mph street race on SR 408 ends with arrest

A man was arrested on Friday morning after he was allegedly caught racing another vehicle on State Road 408 in Orlando at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour.

At around 7:35 a.m., a trooper observed two Nissan vehicles racing side-by-side at a high rate of speed within the eastbound lanes of State Road 408, east of Lake Underhill Road, in Orlando, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The trooper noted that the vehicles were traveling at around 105 miles per hour in a posted 60-mph zone, and both drivers were weaving in and out of the morning commute traffic in an “extremely reckless manner.”

The trooper was able to conduct a traffic stop on one of the Nissan vehicles just prior to the Semoran Boulevard exit, near mile marker 13. The driver, identified as Riverview resident Tyler Leon Simon, pulled over on the right shoulder as the second Nissan vehicle involved in the street race continued traveling eastbound on State Road 408, according to FHP.

Simon was arrested for racing on a highway, and he was transported to Orange County Jail. The FHP report stated that Simon has a prior offense in Orange County for driving in excess of 50 mph over the posted speed limit (120 mph in a posted 70-mph zone).

After Simon was taken to jail, his vehicle was impounded for a 30-day hold pursuant to street racing statues.
