1 killed, 2 injured in rollover crash on I-4 in Volusia

One person was killed, and two others were seriously injured, in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 4 in Volusia County early Saturday morning.

At around 3:20 a.m., two vehicles – a 2013 Honda Accord and 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe – were traveling westbound on I-4 near mile marker 130, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A trooper noted in the report that the Honda was traveling behind the Hyundai. The Honda’s driver and sole occupant, a 37-year-old DeLand man, failed to observe the Hyundai, and a rear-end collision ensued.

After the impact, the Honda rotated counterclockwise, struck a guardrail, and veered off the roadway across all westbound lanes. Moments later, the vehicle approached a ditch before becoming airborne, striking a tree, and landing on its right side, according to the report.

FHP stated that after the initial rear-end collision, the Hyundai also ran off the roadway while rotating in a counterclockwise direction. The vehicle then proceeded to overturn multiple times before landing upright in the median.

While the Hyundai was overturning, a 37-year-old male passenger from DeLand was ejected from the vehicle. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to the report.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 36-year-old Deltona woman, and the driver of the Honda were both transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

The report stated that both occupants of the Hyundai were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. A trooper noted that it is unknown if the Honda’s driver was wearing a seatbelt.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
