Robert Anderson Riddle

0

Robert Anderson, Riddle III, 67, passed away peacefully early on April 23, 2023 at his home in Orlando, Florida. Andy was a loving husband to Lori Boskovich Riddle and a caring father to sons Anderson and George. His wife and sons faithfully cared for him during his battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Jacksonville, Florida on March 16, 1956 and moved to Orlando in the late 60’s where he graduated from Edgewater High School in 1974 and attended college at the University of South Florida.

His engaging personality and strong work ethic saw him through a 40-year bartending career where he helped open 14 restaurants. He began his career in the service industry at an early age working at notable Orlando and Winter Park area locations.

They included the Hyatt Grand Cypress where he met his spouse 30-plus years ago through the seemingly ubiquitous Disney properties and at the first Season’s 52 location. Recent history includes years of sweet memories at the Ravenous Pig. Anderson recently recalled his time there as “where customers and colleagues alike became lifelong friends.” It was there that a local magazine honored him with a”Friendliest Bartender” award.

Unpretentious throughout, he could comfortably spin a conversation with an accomplished sommelier or share a unique find with patrons or friends with an understated ‘give this a try’ and a wry grin.

Locals found in him a friend often ready to try a new locale or hear an eclectic concert. Orlando visitors found in him a wellspring of enthusiasm for small gems worth visiting for a unique meal or fun excursion.

His sense of fun was most evident when getting on the water. He was game to welcome others to join in cruising or fishing — from the surf’s edge through exploring mud flats or the Intracoastal Waterway.

He enjoyed practicing yoga, reading a good novel, writing his own novel and trips to Key West. His other long-time passion was working in real estate. From land developer to landlord, Anderson acquired, refurbished, and sold properties made better through his skills as a master carpenter.

One of his favorite things was driving with his wife and looking for potential real estate projects. His colorful sense of humor, sharp wit, and creative spirit was evident as he transformed otherwise “junky” houses into beautiful homes. He’d often incorporate unique items from Craig’s List, the Habitat ReStore, and discarded/found objects. He was most proud of the beach house he renovated for his family in New Smyrna Beach.

From planning remodels to creative cookery for family, Anderson was always on deck with a new spin on adding life to an old layout or adding spice to a traditional recipe or festive signature beverage formula.

Knowing the eclectic restaurants of New Smyrna Beach or how to make the most of “what’s in the cupboard” condo dinner-fixin’ sessions with family.

Over the last few years Anderson has been a small part of supporting an outreach ministry, serving South Apopka. During the last few months of tribulation, supporting this ministry grew into a passion for him.

Anderson saw it as a once-in-a-lifetime chance to help change the course of severely at-risk youth, give counsel to those who have lost or never truly found their faith, and be a comfort to believers in the community who have found themselves in circumstances that require the unrestrained power of the spirit.

End Time Word Ministry – Awaken for Hope is an outreach street ministry serving South Apopka, Zellwood and Plymouth Florida. The ministry’s primary purpose is to bring the love of Jesus Christ and the hope of salvation to the children, youth and adults living in these neighborhoods.

Anderson hoped friends would consider supporting this ministry. If you would like to make a contribution in his memory, tax-deductible donations may be made to the National Christian Foundation until End Time Word Ministry has received their non-profit status.

Anderson is survived by his wife of 31 years, Lori Boskovich Riddle, children: Robert Anderson Riddle IV, George Patrick Riddle; siblings Eugenia (Joe) Sefcik, Allison (Bob) Brammer and Tom (Ginger) Riddle; brother-in-law Vincent (Tina) Boskovich; sister-in-law Trish (Mark) Parker and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert “Bob” and Mary Jean Riddle.

A celebration of life service will be held on Wednesday, May 17 from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. at the Ravenous Pig Patio, 565 W. Fairbanks, Ave., Winter Park, FL.

Blue-green algae alert issued for Lake Sue

0

Health officials in Orange County have issued a blue-green algae alert for Lake Sue.

On Wednesday, Florida Department of Health in Orange County officials issued a blue-green algae alert for Lake Sue. The alerts come in response to a site visit and water samples taken by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection on Thursday, April 20.

Algae blooms have the potential to produce toxins that may be harmful to visitors and local wildlife. Health officials are emphasizing the importance of exercising caution when near them and are advising residents and visitors to not drink, swim, wade, or use personal watercraft in waters where blooms are present.

Visitors should avoid getting algal water in eyes, noses, or mouths, and pets and livestock should be kept away from the waters until the alerts are lifted, according to health officials.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection collects algae samples from reported bloom locations for toxin analysis. Once completed, the results are posted through the department’s website.

John Philip Weeden

John Philip Weeden 55, passed away April 22, 2023 in Orlando, FL.

A native Orlandoan, John was born August 27, 1967. He attended Edgewater High School class of 1985 and studied Advertising at University of Central Florida.

He began his career as Marketing and Public Relations Manager at Muzak LLC, worked as Audio Engineer at SeaWorld from 1985-1993, from 2002-2008 he worked at Macquarie Mortgages USA, was the Former Worship Pastor at LifePoint Church in West Tampa 2003-2006. John was President & Founder, Producer at Flipster Music and most recently from 2020 to present, Producer, Singer-Songwriter & Recording Artist at Rhymes With Sweden. With an 80’s groove and lush harmonies, Rhymes With Sweden brings hope, love and encouragement to the world. On his one-year wedding anniversary, John’s song “SoulMate” was their latest single. A song that he wrote for his wife Andrea and performed at their wedding.

John was presently employed as Director of Business Development at Zonda Real Estate. In a letter received from their chief Sales Officer, the Zonda family expressed how they will greatly miss John’s update “Coming to you all from sunny Central Florida” on their weekly sales pipeline call. He was a respected colleague and a true friend, and will be remembered for his positivity, kindness and generosity. They comment that of the nine years they had the pleasure of knowing him, they had never seen him happier than the last couple of years.

John’s motto was To God be the glory, come what may.

As a singer-songwriter, recording artist and worship leader, nothing was more important than the physical ability to draw in air and belt out songs to sing. He sang for 40 years, led worship services in the music ministry since 1997. Written hundreds of songs, released 18 songs on Spotify and Apple Music in the past 2 years, and planned to release another 5 songs and a new album (God willing) by this summer. In December, he was diagnosed with “end-stage pulmonary fibrosis,” which dramatically impacted his everyday life. John was hoping to get on the waiting list for a double lung transplant with the distinct possibility that it might take place within the next 6-24 months.

John wrote: My wife Andrea and the kids have been very strong and helpful through this dramatic change affecting our family. I am truly blessed by their love. I am also moved by the hundreds of people in our church family praying over me.

Recently at the men’s Advanced Boot Camp, approximately 50 men laid hands on John and prayed. Even though he was still physically able to lead worship while wearing an oxygen tube, his team of 4 consisted of a lead singer, a second guitarist and a drummer, filling out the sound and taking the burden off of John. He said “ Even though the enemy may be trying to sideline me by paralyzing my lungs, I will NOT stop praising the Lord. I will not be silenced. Once a worship pastor, always a worship pastor. There is no retirement in God’s kingdom—just a pivot in mission.”

He believed that in this fallen world, God does not create sickness and disease. But through His mercy, He longs for us to grow closer to Him and help us walk through it. It’s in our weakness that God’s power is perfect (2 Cor 12:9). He was at peace through this ordeal, and had faith that God would guide him though this, even though he didn’t know how this would turn out, he trusted His sovereignty and His wisdom and gave Him the glory, no matter what.

John will be remembered for being a dedicated family man that loved his family dearly. He is survived by his loving wife, Andrea Torres Weeden; his beloved children, Kara Weeden, John “Jay” Weeden Jr, Gabriella Ariosa, Matteos Ariosa, and Isabella Ariosa; loved parents, Philip and Maria Weeden; brothers, Carey Weeden and Mark Weeden and his wife, Kristen; his Godson and nephew, Logan and nieces and nephews, Alayna, Olivia, Brandon, Sofia and Anthony; and a host of Aunts, Uncles and cousins. He will also be missed by his three beloved dogs, Sadie, Princess and Loki. John will be greatly missed by all.

Ocoee man who tried to burn ex-girlfriend alive in work cubicle gets 15 years in prison

0

A 41-year-old Ocoee man who doused his ex-girlfriend with gasoline and lit her on fire while she was in a cubicle at her job, was sentenced to spend the next fifteen years behind bars.

Patrick Joseph pled guilty to charges of attempted first degree murder and arson resulting in injury on Thursday, April 27. He was sentenced to spend 15 years in state prison, with 15 years of supervised release to follow.

The verdict comes over a year after Joseph visited his former employer and attacked a woman that he had previously been involved with romantically.

During that incident on February 28, 2022, Orlando Police Department officers were called to McLane Food Service (2444 Tradeport Drive) in reference to a person on fire.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered a female victim with burns to her upper body. The woman was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

During their investigation, police interviewed multiple employees and reviewed surveillance from both the business and a local car rental agency.

According to court records, Joseph entered the second floor of the building at approximately 9:40 a.m. and proceeded to one of the cubicles where the victim was working. Joseph doused the victim with gasoline before setting her on fire and leaving the scene at 9:41 a.m.

Multiple witnesses confirmed seeing a plume of smoke and flames erupt from the victim’s cubicle. After seeing the flames, two of the victim’s coworkers retrieved fire extinguishers to put out the fire.

In video surveillance obtained by the business, a heavy set suspect standing approximately 6’0″ tall is seen entering the scene wearing a gray McLane hoodie with a face mask, black gloves, and a dark colored freezer jumpsuit tied around his waist. That suspect, who was later identified as Joseph, is seen entering and leaving the scene from the same exit, before driving away from the scene in a newer model Toyota Camry.

During their investigation, authorities determined that on the morning of the incident, Joseph drove his 2017 Dodge Durango to the Aldi’s located at 14001 W Colonial Drive. In surveillance footage, Joseph is seen exiting the vehicle and walking across the street to Enterprise Rentals, located at 13999 W Colonial Drive in Winter Garden.

At around 8:09 a.m., Joseph signed for the rental of a black, 2021 Toyota Camry. Joseph then left the facility and is seen on video driving northbound on S. Park Avenue. At the time, police believe Joseph drove to his house.

In footage obtained from McLane Food Service, a newer model Toyota Camry is seen parking at the facility sometime between 9:00 a.m. and 9:35 a.m. A suspect is seen entering the stairs of the building that lead to the second floor at approximately 9:40 a.m., before running out of the same entrance at approximately 9:41. The suspect is then seen entering a black Toyota Camry before leaving the area.

Shortly after 10 a.m., Joseph is seen on video surveillance returning to the Aldi’s parking lot and parking next to his Durango. When exiting the vehicle, Joseph is seen wearing the same freezer overalls that the suspect was wearing during the attack. The video shows Joseph remove the overalls and place them in what appeared to be a black trash bag.

Joseph is then seen driving to the Enterprise Rental and returning the vehicle at approximately 10:17 a.m.

After police obtained additional information about Joseph being the most likely suspect, the victim and her coworkers were reinterviewed.

During their interviews, police were told that Joseph had previously made threats against the victim’s life, threatening to “make her life miserable” and suggesting that if she did “not end her own life, he would.”

When the victim was medically able to answer questions in the hospital, investigators asked her if she knew Joseph. She acknowledged that she did and authorities noticed after asking the question, the victim’s pulse rate on the heart monitor increased significantly.

The victim confirmed that she and Joseph had seen each other briefly in the past and that he had made threats to her.

Authorities determined that Joseph had previously been employed by McLane, but had not worked for the company for over two years. As a result, he had firsthand knowledge of how to get to the victim’s office. Employees confirmed that for someone to know “how to get to the administrative offices,” they would have to have “personal knowledge of the warehouse.”

Joseph was arrested on March 4, 2022 at his residence in Ocoee. On Thursday, April 27, the victim, who suffered serious injuries and burns as a result of the attack, issued a statement of impact in court. Joseph entered a plea of guilty on two of the four counts he faced and was sentenced shortly thereafter.

Sean Heslin

0

Please pray for the repose of the soul of Father Sean Heslin. On the front page of the June 16, 1967, edition of the Florida Catholic, there are photos of five young Irish priests newly ordained to serve the Sunshine State. It is easy for the eye to go straight to the fourth photo down. Among the solemn photos of the other priests is a mug revealing a bright-eyed, young man with a huge smile. That would be Father Heslin — a fixture of spiritual strength and humility for the Orlando Diocese for six decades.

Bishop Peter Birch of Ossory ordained Father Heslin for the Diocese of St. Augustine (which encompassed most of the state) June 11, 1967, at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Kilkenny, Ireland. The sixth of eight children, Father Heslin was born Nov. 27, 1942, in Drumcauskeen, Cloone, County Leitrim in Ireland. He attended Rossan National School there, St. Mary’s Apostolic School in Moyne, County Longford, and made his seminary studies at St. Kieran’s College, Kilkenny.

When the Diocese of Orlando was established in 1968, Father Heslin began teaching at Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando. During that time he also served as director of Scouting for the Central Florida Council of Boy Scouts of America. His parish assignments included:

Parochial Vicar St. James, Orlando, 1967-1968
Parochial Vicar, St. Margaret Mary, Winter Park, 1968-1972
Parochial Vicar, St. Peter, Deland, 1972-1974
Pastor, St. Paul, Daytona Beach, 1974-1984
Pastor, St. Joseph, Winter Haven, 1984-1992
Pastor, St. James Cathedral, Orlando, 1992-2001
Pastor, Our Saviour, Daytona Beach, 2001-2015

In early 2002 Father Heslin met the serious challenge of recovering from being attacked by a stranger in the church. Father Heslin, seriously injured, miraculously survived the attack and asked the community of faith to forgive his attacker. In keeping with his humble and forgiving nature, he said, “I feel no hostility or animosity toward him (the attacker); I hope and pray he can get whatever help he needs.” Once released from the hospital, he returned to minister to the people of Our Savior Catholic Church until he retired in 2015. He continued to serve as pastor emeritus and remained active with the parish community until his health declined.

A man of prayer, Father Heslin would be found with prayerbook in hand, in-between ministering to the parish community. In an interview Father Heslin said, “There is no substitute for working with people. The priesthood is about dealing with people. You’re involved in their joys and sorrows; you’re there from birth and at death. You have to listen with a sympathetic ear to the needs of anybody. Listen to all people, not just parishioners . . . When I finally stand before God, I hope the Lord can say to me that I treated everybody fairly. That I was the same to you whether you were rich or poor, educated or uneducated,” he said.

In September 2022, Father Fred Ruse, Vicar for Senior Priests, remarked about a recent visit with Father Heslin, “Sean was a joy to be with as we talked about a photo of his parents on his wall which pleased him greatly.”

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May all the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen
