Craig Matthew Smith, aged 60, passed away on Thursday, August 11, 2022 following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Craig was born on November 21, 1961 and lived in Scarsdale, New York until his family moved to Winter Park, Florida in 1973. He was a graduate of Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando, Florida and matriculated to Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama.

After graduation he met the love of his life, Diane, marrying her in 1990. Among many interests, they care for a herd of pets that has included dogs, birds and reptiles. Among them were Craig’s beloved German Shepherds: Pooka, Elwood and Jake. He enjoyed working on cars and any sort of home improvement project. Craig’s “MacGyver” instincts were always evident in his resolution to automotive or household repair challenges.

Throughout his life, Craig pursued several careers. He is a U.S. Army veteran with deployments to Korea and Egypt. He served as a helicopter Crew Chief and Standardization Instructor in the Army Aviation Brigade, 12th Aviation Battalion for much of his military service. Following his honorable discharge, Craig operated a furniture restoration business in northern Virginia. He had clients in Washington, D.C., and surrounds. Craig recounted the adventures he had navigating through post 9/11 security checkpoints with a van load of tools and equipment. Following the passing of his business partner, he and Diane relocated to central Florida. Putting his military experience and mechanical aptitude to good use, Craig worked in the defense industry for the remainder of his professional career.

Craig is survived by his wife of 32 years, Diane Smith, his brother Mark Smith (Altamonte Springs) and many first and second cousins. He is predeceased by his parents, G. Elliott Smith and Catherine M. Smith.
