Casselberry water treatment systems overwhelmed, residents ask to reduce usage

Casselberry has joined a growing list of municipalities asking its residents to cut back on water usage in light of historic overflows that have resulted in sewer backups across the area.

Power outages and extreme flooding conditions have continued to overwhelm the Casselberry sewer treatment system, according to city officials. The system is currently experiencing widespread sewage overflows that have created sewer backups at local homes and businesses.

“Regardless of whether or not your home has power, we are urging customers to only use water for essential functions until further notice to help ease the pressure off of the lift stations, the sanitary sewer system, the wastewater plants, and the water plants,” reads a statement issued by city officials.

Authorities say that conservation helps lower extreme flows that can backup into a home or business, even if it is connected to a septic system, since the ground is under high saturation right now.

The city is asking residents to delay doing laundry, washing dishes, using irrigation systems, washing vehicles, pressure washing, or taking long showers. It is also asking residents to limit toilet flushing and eliminate any “excessive use of water that is not absolutely necessary.”

The city joins others that have had to issue similar statements to residents.

On Sunday, Orlando officials advised residents to limit their water use in light of a 36-inch water main break that has been overwhelming local lift stations.

In Winter Park, at least two lift stations are still completely submerged and all others are operating at capacity.
