Attempted murder suspect dead after officer-involved shooting in downtown Orlando

An attempted murder suspect was shot and killed by a police officer on Wednesday evening after he pulled out a gun and fired a round during a traffic stop in downtown Orlando.

According to the Orlando Police Department, officers stopped a vehicle near the intersection of Orange Avenue and S Lucerne Circle at around 5:55 p.m. The vehicle was driven by a man who had warrants for attempted murder and aggravated stalking in connection with an Orange County Sheriff’s Office case.

The man was later identified by police as 29-year-old Michael David Dennis.

The police department stated that when officers exited their patrol vehicle, Dennis “produced a handgun” and proceeded to fire a round.

In response, one of the OPD officers returned fire, striking Dennis. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene, according to Orlando police.

No officers were injured in the shooting.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting. In addition, the officer who returned fire has been placed on administrative leave.

Upon completion of FDLE’s investigation, the Orlando Police Department will conduct its own investigation into the shooting incident.

No further details were released by law enforcement.
