A hiker who got lost while she was walking near the St. John’s River was found by an Orange County Sheriff’s Office helicopter after calling 911 for help.
On Sunday, January 1, the hiker, who was not identified by police, was traveling near the St. John’s River in east Orange County when she became lost.
Deputies from the OCSO Aviation Section were dispatched to the area and eventually spotted the hiker from above. She was rescued by a patrol deputy shortly thereafter.
In a statement posted to social media, the sheriff’s office emphasized the importance of never hiking alone, if possible. Additionally, hikers are advised to avoid going off the marked trails, to bring a charged cell phone, to plan out a path ahead of time, and to notify people of their location before they embark.
