The Clermont Police Department is warning the public of an increase in car thefts due to a TikTok challenge that demonstrates how to steal a vehicle using a USB cable.
Law enforcement authorities say that a recent TikTok challenge is taking advantage of a manufacturer’s defect on Kia and Hyundai vehicles that were built between 2010 and 2021.
The vehicles are not equipped with an ignition immobilizer and, as a result, can be compromised using a USB cable.
Police advise owners of these types of vehicles to use secondary locking devices or install anti-theft systems. Other tips include installing a steering wheel locking device, installing a battery disconnect switch, or installing a kill switch.
If you or anyone you know experiences any instances of vehicle theft, contact the Clermont Police Department at 352-394-5588, or the Central Florida Crimeline at 800-423-8477.
