Orlando police have released an arrest affidavit for a “smiling” teenager who is accused of two shootings that left three people dead last week, including a 9-year-old girl and a Spectrum News 13 reporter.
On Tuesday, Orange County Sheriff’s Office released a six-page arrest affidavit for 19-year-old Keith Melvin Moses, who is accused of killing three individuals and critically injuring two others in Pine Hill on February 22.
The affidavit details the timeline of events that began just after 11 a.m., when police were called for the homicide of Natacha Augustin. Augustin was riding as a passenger in the front seat of a vehicle being driven by one of Moses’ cousins. The driver spotted Moses, who “seemed down,” and allowed him to enter the vehicle in the back seat. Within 30 seconds, Moses fatally shot Augustin.
Augustin was pronounced deceased at around 11:29 a.m., approximately 15 minutes after the first 911 call was made.
In the hours that followed, detectives worked to canvas the scene to collect information for their investigation. By 3:21 p.m., the roadway was reopened and the scene was cleared.
Just before 4 p.m., Spectrum News 13 reporter Dylan Lyons and photographer Jesse Walden arrived on the scene to cover the incident for the channel’s 5 p.m. broadcast. According to Walden, Moses walked up to the van while he was gathering equipment. Moses opened fire, striking Walden, before turning his attention to Lyons, who was seated in the passenger seat of the vehicle.
According to the District Nine Medical Examiner’s Office, Lyons was killed by a gunshot wound that entered his left arm before entering his chest and lodging itself in his right arm.
After shooting the reporters, Moses walked to a nearby home and entered the home through an unlocked sliding glass door. While in the home, Moses shot 9-year-old T’Yonna Major before shooting her mother, Brandi Major, who was taking a nap.
Police received 911 calls at 4:05 p.m. regarding the shooting involving the reporters, and another call from Major at 4:08 p.m. as she laid barricaded in her bathroom with her daughter.
Deputies arrived on the scene at approximately 4:11 p.m. and located Moses by the intersection of Bolling Drive and Hialeah Street, a couple blocks away from the shootings. Moses was arrested and was in possession of a gun that was hot to the touch. Police have since linked the gun with all three shootings.
Moses was transported to the Orlando Regional Medical Center to be evaluated. As he was in the hospital, he would not talk to deputies or medical staff, but made “facial expressions such as smiling,” according to the affidavit. Additionally, Moses made hand symbols of guns and pointed them at his head.
Moses was released from the hospital and transported to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to be interviewed by homicide detectives. During the interview, authorities say Moses refused to say anything and kept his eyes shut throughout the conversation. Detectives left the room multiple times and every time they reentered to address Moses, he “smiled,” “continued to not say anything,” and “kept his eyes shut.”
Moses is being charged with three counts of first degree murder and two counts of attempted first degree murder for the shootings.
