One woman was killed and another was seriously injured after they were struck by a vehicle on Interstate 4 while they waited next to their vehicle, which had been disabled from a prior accident.
The fatal accident took place on Saturday, April 8, at around 5:52 a.m., near mile marker 90 on I-4 east.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, two 20-year-old women, one from Edgewater and one from Daytona Beach, were standing outside of their 2014 Ford Focus.
The women were positioned near the rear of the vehicle as they waited for help after being involved in an accident. Authorities say that the vehicle failed to maintain the lane when approaching a right-hand curve and struck a concrete wall barrier. After striking the barrier, the car was repositioned on the outside, paved shoulder of the eastbound lanes.
For unknown reasons, a 2007 Honda Civic being driven by a 26-year-old Orlando man veered off the roadway to the right side and, as a result, struck the left rear of the Focus, as well as both women.
The driver and the Edgewater woman were transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious injuries. The Daytona Beach woman was transported to AdventHealth Orlando, where she was pronounced deceased.
