Suspect who fled scene after hitting moped tracked down by police

A 27-year-old man from St. Cloud is facing multiple felony charges after he allegedly struck a man on a moped with his vehicle and critically injured him before fleeing the scene and being tracked down by police.

Anthony Marcel Martin was arrested by members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on Monday night on charges related to a crash that happened at approximately 11:22 p.m.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 25-year-old Orlando man was riding a 2016 Riya Zhejiang moped northbound on Orange Blossom Trail, approaching the intersection with Americana Boulevard.

As the rider attempted to make a left turn to travel westbound on Americana Boulevard, he was struck by a 2008 Nissan Altima.

After the collision, the Nissan fled from the scene. A witness who saw the accident claims the Nissan was traveling “above the posted speed limit” when the crash occurred.

The rider was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition.

Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office began looking for the vehicle and, a short time later, they located a vehicle with consistent damage in a nearby parking lot.

The driver, who was later identified as Martin, was arrested by FHP troopers and was booked into the Orange County Jail.

Martin is facing charges of failing to stop or remain at a crash involving serious injuries and tampering with physical evidence for removing the license plate from his vehicle.
