A 71-year-old bicyclist who had fallen from his bike and was laying in the roadway when he was struck by a vehicle along an Orlando roadway this weekend.
On Monday evening, the Florida Highway Patrol provided an update on the fatal hit-and-run that took place near the intersection of N Powers Drive and Indian Hill Road on Sunday, January 7, at around 1:10 a.m.
According to FHP, the driver of a 2022 Kia K5 that had been wanted in connection with the accident contacted authorities on Sunday and advised that her vehicle may have been involved in a crash.
Traffic homicide investigators made contact with the driver, a 28-year-old woman from Orlando, and found that her the vehicle had undercarriage damage. The damage was consistent with the collision with the pedestrian.
Investigators say that the man, who was from Orlando, was riding his bicycle southbound on Powers Drive.
They believe the man fell from his bicycle and was laying in the roadway in the path of the vehicle.
Originally, police had reported that the vehicle had struck the bicycle from behind.
The man was transported to Health Central Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
After the collision, traffic homicide investigators located a car part at the scene for a vehicle that they believe was involved in the collision. That car part was for a 2021- 2023 KIA K5 of unknown color, which matched that of the woman’s vehicle.
