Bicyclist struck and killed by SUV in Winter Springs

A 58-year-old man died early Monday morning after his bicycle was struck by an SUV near an intersection in Seminole County.

At around 2:35 a.m., a 2019 Nissan Rogue and a bicycle were both traveling westbound on E Lake Drive, west of Lakeridge Court, in Winter Springs. The bicyclist was ahead of the SUV in the outside lane, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A trooper noted in the report that the driver of the SUV “failed to avoid (the bicycle) ahead,” and the front of the SUV proceeded to strike the bicycle.

The man riding the bicycle sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The report stated that he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

After the collision, the SUV continued heading westbound on E Lake Drive. The driver, identified in the report as a 25-year-old Casselberry man, later called law enforcement advising that he “may have hit something.”

FHP troopers responded to a nearby residence and observed damage on the SUV that was “consistent with this crash.” The vehicle was secured as evidence.

No further details were released by FHP.

Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call the Florida Highway Patrol at 407-737-2213.
