The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 95 in Volusia County that left a woman and child dead, and three others injured, on Monday afternoon.
The fatal accident occurred shortly after 3:40 p.m. in the northbound lanes of I-95, south of U.S. 1 (mile marker 272), in Ormond Beach.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, three vehicles – a 2013 Ford Fiesta, 2023 Toyota Corolla, and 2022 Ford Ranger – were all traveling northbound on I-95. The Fiesta was in the inside lane, and the Corolla was in front of the Ranger in the center lane.
FHP stated that while heading northbound on the interstate, the driver of the Fiesta lost control of the vehicle. Moments later, the vehicle veered off the roadway and onto the inside shoulder.
The Fiesta’s driver over-corrected to the right, which caused the vehicle to begin rotating. While it was still rotating, the vehicle proceeded to strike the Corolla.
After the initial impact, the Corolla rotated onto the center median before colliding with a guardrail.
The Fiesta continued rotating across the center lane and into the outside lane, directly in the path of the Ranger. The front of the Ranger then crashed into the Fiesta’s left side.
According to the report, the Fiesta had three occupants: a 38-year-old woman (driver), 20-year-old woman, and 2-year-old girl, all from Palm Coast.
The Fiesta’s driver succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene, and the toddler was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased. The adult passenger was hospitalized for treatment of serious injuries.
The two other drivers involved, a 33-year-old Kissimmee woman (Toyota Corolla) and 59-year-old Palm Coast man (Ford Ranger), both sustained minor injuries and were taken to a local hospital.
Due to the multi-vehicle accident, the northbound lanes on I-95 were temporarily blocked near the scene of the crash on Monday.
The names of the individuals involved in the accident were not released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
