A 28-year-old Orlando man was recently arrested in connection with a 2022 hit-and-run crash in Orange County that left a construction worker dead.
On Thursday, August 1, 2024, Tyler Shane Sutherland was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide for his alleged involvement in a multi-vehicle crash that killed 35-year-old Nathaniel Young, Jr. and seriously injured another construction worker.
The fatal crash occurred near the intersection of Narcoossee Road and Emerson Lake Boulevard on February 7, 2022.
According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, Sutherland was traveling southbound in a sedan on Narcoossee Road, near an active construction zone. A traffic shift was in place, which caused motorists traveling southbound on Narcoossee Road to temporarily travel in the left northbound lane before returning to the southbound lanes.
The report stated that as Sutherland approached the construction zone, he “failed to drive within the traffic shift.” His vehicle then struck Young and another construction worker, along with two construction trucks, before veering into the northbound lane and striking a pickup truck, according to FHP.
Young sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The other unidentified worker was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.
After the collisions, Sutherland allegedly fled on foot into a nearby marsh along the west shoulder of Narcoossee Road, where he was located and detained by two off-duty officers.
An investigation was conducted by FHP, which ultimately led to a warrant being issued for Sutherland’s arrest. On Thursday, he was taken into custody and transported to Orange County Jail.
Sutherland is being charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash with injuries. He had his first appearance in court on Friday, August 2.
