A 55-year-old DeLeon Springs man was killed on Sunday night after he was ejected from his SUV during a rollover crash in Volusia County.

The fatal crash occurred shortly after 9:15 p.m. on Sunday, March 2, near the intersection of U.S. Highway 17 and Little Brown Church Road, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

A 2004 Nissan Pathfinder was traveling northbound on U.S. Highway 17, near the Little Brown Church Road intersection, when the SUV veered off the roadway and onto the east shoulder. FHP stated that the vehicle then entered the oncoming travel lane before rotating clockwise and overturning off the roadway.

The Nissan’s driver and sole occupant, the 55-year-old man, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was ejected from the SUV while it overturned, according to the report.

The SUV continued overturning before coming to a final rest on its roof on the east shoulder. In the report, a trooper noted that the vehicle landed on top of the driver.

As a result, the driver sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation, according to FHP.
