A six-year-old Volusia County Sheriff’s Office K-9 who was assigned to a local airport has passed away.
“With heavy hearts, we have to share the sad news that VCSO K-9 Charlie has passed away,” said the sheriff’s office in a social media post on Monday night.
Charlie was a bomb-sniffing German Shepherd who was assigned to the Daytona Beach International Airport in 2021. While on duty, he helped keep travelers safe.
According to VCSO, Charlie was taken to a veterinarian this past weekend following a medical emergency.
Charlie’s cause of death is currently unknown. A full necropsy is scheduled to be conducted by a veterinarian to determine the cause.
“Thank you K-9 Charlie for your years of good work and service to this community,” said VCSO. “So sorry to say goodbye too soon.”
