A two-year-old girl died on Saturday afternoon after she was struck by a car on a Volusia County beach.
A preliminary investigation reportedly revealed that the toddler ran onto the beach near E 7th Avenue in New Smyrna Beach at around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
VCSO stated that the toddler proceeded to “run into a traffic lane,” directly in the path of an oncoming car. Moments later, the fatal collision occurred, and the child was taken to a local hospital where she was pronounced deceased.
In a media release, VCSO said that the driver remained at the scene. The sheriff’s office added that speed and impairment are not believed to be factors in the fatal crash.
No further details were provided by law enforcement.
“The Volusia Sheriff’s Office sends our deepest condolences to the child’s family,” said the agency.
