A 51-year-old man was hospitalized early Wednesday morning after he was reportedly shot by an Osceola County Sheriff’s Office deputy during a physical altercation at a local residence.

Shortly after 2 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, OCSO received a 911 call regarding a family member who was “experiencing a mental health crisis.” The caller added that the family member was “possibly armed with a weapon,” according to the sheriff’s office.

A deputy responded to the home, which is located in the 4700 block of Marcos Circle in Kissimmee. Upon arrival, the deputy made contact with the 51-year-old man who was the subject of the 911 call, and a physical altercation reportedly ensued between them.

During the encounter, the deputy discharged their firearm and struck the man, according to OCSO.

The man was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The sheriff’s office noted that the man was conscious and alert during the transport.

The responding deputy was not hurt during the altercation, and no additional injuries were reported at the scene.

No further details were provided by OCSO.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting an independent investigation into the incident, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.

This past weekend, a man was tasered and arrested by Kissimmee police after he allegedly charged at them while wielding a large kitchen knife.
