A 42-year-old man was arrested this past weekend after he allegedly groped two nurses and sexually harassed staff members while receiving treatment at a hospital in DeLand.

DeLand Police Department officers responded to the AdventHealth DeLand (701 W Plymouth Avenue in DeLand) at around 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, in reference to a disturbance, according to the agency.

When officers arrived at the hospital, two nurses reported that one of their patients, identified as Sanford resident Stephen W. Evans, was sexually harassing their staff. The nurses further alleged that Evans had made “several inappropriate comments” toward them while “sexually touching himself,” adding that he also “forcefully groped them.”

DPD stated that the hospital’s staff confronted Evans and demanded that he stop his inappropriate behavior. Evans reportedly became “verbally aggressive,” which prompted the nurses to notify AdventHealth security, who quickly responded and restrained Evans until law enforcement arrived at the scene.

Evans underwent an evaluation and was medically cleared. After being discharged from the hospital, he was placed under arrest and booked into Volusia County Jail, where he remains in custody.

Jail records show that Evans is being held on a $20,000 bond. He is facing two felony counts of battery on specified personnel.
