Former Magic player shot, killed in east Orlando

A former first-round NBA draft pick and Michigan State basketball star was shot and killed in east Orlando.

The shooting took place in the early morning hours of Monday, May 9. Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to calls of the incident in the 2500 block of Egret Shores Drive at around 1:37 a.m.

Upon arrival, deputies found 31-year-old Adreian Payne was suffering from a gunshot wound. Payne was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

While at the scene, Lawrence Dority, who was later identified as the shooter, agreed to be transported to OCSO headquarters for an interview.

After he was interviewed by homicide detectives, Dority was arrested and transported to the Orange County Jail. He is being charged with first-degree murder.

Originally from Dayton, Ohio, Payne was drafted from the Michigan State Spartans in the 2014 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks with the 15th pick.

Payne played for four seasons in the NBA, appearing in over 100 games for the Hawks, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Orlando Magic. Most recently, Payne appeared with Utenos Juventus, a Lithuanian professional basketball club based in Utena, Lithuania.
