Wider sidewalks, bike lane, other pedestrian improvements coming to Pine Hills Road

The county will begin a series of changes to Pine Hills Road to improve pedestrian safety in the area, including the addition of a dedicated bike lane, wider sidewalks, and new gateway signage.

On Wednesday, February 8, construction of the first of three phases of pedestrian safety improvements on Pine Hills Road will begin.

Multiple changes will be made to the section, including a raised median and dedicated left-hand turn lanes to replace the existing dual left-turn lanes between West Colonial Drive and Bonnie Brae Circle.

Additionally, the sidewalk will be widened on the east side of the road from 5 feet wide to 12 feet wide. The path will also be a shared-use path from Silver Star Road to Bonnie Brae Circle as part of the extension of the Pine Hills Trail.

A 7-foot wide dedicated bike lane will also be added to the roadway in each direction from Colonial Drive to Silver Star Road.

A lighted-sign and decorative, knee-height walls will also be implemented at the intersection of Pine Hills Road and Silver Star Road, in addition to custom wayfinding signs, landscape and hardscape upgrades, and drainage updates.

County officials estimate the project will be completed by the end of 2023. Residents and drivers who regularly use Pine Hills Road should expect temporary traffic lane and sidewalk closures during the duration of the project.

Visit the county’s website for more information on the pedestrian safety improvements coming to Pine Hills Road.
