A 29-year-old mother was killed and her 2-year-old boy is in critical condition after they were struck by two vehicles while attempting to cross Colonial Drive.
The fatal accident took place on W Colonial Drive and Powers Drive on Saturday, February 25, just before 9 p.m.
According to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol, a 39-year-old Orlando man was driving his Infinity eastbound on SR 50, in the center travel lane.
Two pedestrians, an Orlando mother and her 2-year-old son, were attempting to cross SR 50 in a southerly direction when they walked into the path of the vehicle. The mother and her child were not in a crosswalk.
After both pedestrians were knocked down into the roadway, the mother was reportedly struck by another vehicle.
That vehicle fled the scene after the crash and was last seen on eastbound SR 50. The vehicle was described by witnesses as a dark colored sedan.
The mother was transported to Orlando Health Center Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased upon arrival.
The toddler, who has not been positively identified by police, was transported to the Arnold Palmer Hospital in critical condition. As of this report, the child was being held in the Intensive Care Unit.
