35-year-old found hanging in Seminole County jail cell

Seminole County authorities are investigating the death of an inmate at the John E. Polk Correction Facility after he was found hanging in his cell.

Geoffrey Cairns, 35, was found dead in his cell on Wednesday morning, according to a statement issued by the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office.

According to authorities, staff was performing routine checks of inmates when they discovered Cairns unresponsive in his cell, hanging from a bedsheet tied around his neck. Corrections staff immediately began CPR in attempt to revive Cairns, who is from Apopka, but were unsuccessful.

The Seminole County Fire Department pronounced Cairns deceased shortly after arriving on the scene.

Authorities say that the investigation is ongoing, but that preliminary findings suggest the incident was a suicide. There were no signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, according to police.

Cairns had been incarcerated at the facility since Saturday, March 4 on charges of petit theft.
