Driver critical after semi-truck overturns, catches fire on Turnpike

A 24-year-old man is in critical condition after his semi-truck crashed into another semi-truck, overturned, and became engulfed in flames on the Florida Turnpike early this morning.

The accident took place near mile marker 246 on the Florida Turnpike on Tuesday, June 20, at around 2:10 a.m., according to a report by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The 24-year-old man was driving a 2023 Volvo semi-truck with a trailer southbound on the Florida Turnpike, just north of Fortune Road near mile marker 246.

For unknown reasons, the semi-truck drifted into the outside lane of the highway and struck the left rear of a 2015 semi-truck being driven by a 44-year-old Miami man.

As a result of the collision, the Volvo semi-truck overturned and became engulfed in flames. The driver was able to exit the vehicle and was airlifted in critical condition to Orlando Regional Medical Center.

The Miami man was not injured in the crash and remained on the scene.

The southbound lanes were closed earlier this morning as crews worked to clear the area.
