80-year-old shoots, kills wife in Sanford home

An elderly husband was arrested on a charge of second degree homicide after he contacted police and reported that he had shot and killed his 78-year-old wife.

Sanford Police Department officers were dispatched to the 200 block of S. Summerlin Avenue on Thursday, July 20 just after 8 a.m. after police received a call reporting a shooting.

The caller, who was later identified as Nicholas Coulantes, stated that he had just shot a person at his home and continued to speak with the 911 dispatcher until police arrived.

Officers located Coulantes, 80, waiting for them in the front yard of his home. Inside the home, police located his wife, Alexandria Coulantes, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

Coulantes cooperated with investigators and was taken into custody without incident.

After interviewing Coulantes, detectives determined that he shot his wife before calling and reporting the incident to police.

“This isn’t a case of who killed Alexandria. The ‘why’ Nicholas Coulantes took the life of his wife is what investigators are working hard to understand,” said Sanford Police Department Chief Cecil Smith regarding the incident. “This is a devastating event and we would at least like to give Alexandria’s family the answer to that question.”

Coulantes is currently being held at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility in Sanford.

Anyone with information pertaining to this crime is asked to contact the Sanford Police Department at 407-688-5070, or the Central Florida Crimeline at 800 423-TIPS (8477). Calls made to Crimeline remain anonymous, and tips that lead to solving homicides are eligible for a cash reward of up to $5,000 dollars.
