Fire started by unattended candle tears through Winter Park apartment

A fire that was started by an unattended candle tore through a residence at a Winter Park apartment complex on Tuesday morning.

Multiple units from the Seminole County Fire Department, Winter Springs Fire Department, Longwood Fire Department, and Oviedo Fire Department were called to the Sapphire Winter Park Apartments (1703 N. Semoran Boulevard) at 5:38 a.m. on Tuesday, August 15.

Crews arrived at the scene at 5:42 a.m. and found that one apartment unit was on fire. A fast attack was performed and emergency crews had water on the fire by 5:47 a.m.

The fire was knocked down by 5:59 a.m. and, although smoke spread to other units, the fire was contained to the single unit where it started.

According to authorities, the occupant of the apartment indicated that the fire was most likely caused by an unattended candle. However, state fire officials are still working to determine the cause.

Seminole County fire officials say that at least four of the apartment units were displaced and occupants were connected with the American Red Cross of Central Florida for assistance.
