UCF suspends classes as Hurricane Idalia nears Florida

The University of Central Florida has suspended classes for Wednesday, August 30, in anticipation of Hurricane Idalia, which was upgraded to a Category 2 hurricane earlier today.

The school made the announcement on Tuesday afternoon.

“Academic and most campus operations are suspended Wednesday, August 30. Students, faculty, and staff should remain indoors and off the roads during periods of possible intermittent tropical winds and weather,” reads the statement issued by the school.

The university says that standard operations will continue through the rest of Tuesday, and are planned to resume on Thursday, August 31.

“Select campus dining facilities and student services will be open on Wednesday to support students who live on campus,” says the university.

Earlier on Tuesday, Orange County Public Schools announced that all schools across the county would be closed on Wednesday.

As of 5 p.m. on Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center has classified Hurricane Idalia as a category 2 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds reaching 100 mph.
