6-year-old girl, teenager killed in drive-by shooting in Orlando

A 6-year-old child and a teenager were both killed, and a woman was injured after a shooting in the Carver Shores community earlier this week.

Orlando Police Department Officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 1100 block of Poppy Avenue on Tuesday, August 29, at around 8:20 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers located 6-year-old Ajahliyah Hashim and her mother had both been shot. Both victims were transported to a local hospital. At the time, Hashim was in critical condition and her mother was in stable condition. On Thursday, police say Hashim succumbed to her injuries and passed away.

A third victim of the shooting, 19-year-old Isaiyah Wright, was located at Health Central Hospital. He was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

On Friday, police stated that they believe Hashim and her mother were not the intended targets of the drive-by shooting. Homicide detectives are currently investigating the case and are following all possible leads, according to OPD.

Hashim was a student at Eagle’s Nest Elementary School, according to a statement issued by Orange County Public Schools Superintendent Maria F. Vazquez.

“My heart goes out to the Eagle’s Nest Elementary community, which just lost a 6-year-old student to gun violence last night,” said Vazquez. “Our students should not have to live in a world where their lives are in danger in their own neighborhoods.”
