First orthopedic hospital in Florida constructed in downtown Orlando

Construction is now complete on the new, $187 million Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute located in downtown Orlando.

Skanska USA, the construction company behind the project, announced its completion at the end of August.

The 375,000-square-foot facility was completed in two phases. The first phase was completed in March and included a six-story medical office pavilion that features 12 operating rooms and the “latest advancements in medical technology,” according to the company.

One of those advancements is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using augmented reality, which produces “ultrafast” results.

The pavilion also features a 62-exam room clinic that offers walk-in orthopedic care, as well as a physical therapy space featuring sports simulators for athletes.

Phase two of the project included a seven-story facility featuring the state’s first orthopedic hospital with 10 additional operating rooms, 75 inpatient smart rooms, and a 10-station Bioskills lab.

A 116-person stadium-seated auditorium is located on the seventh floor of the building to host lectures. Team members will also be able to utilize a 3D printer to work on complex cases and develop unique devices to advance science and medicine.

“Deeply ingrained in the communities it serves, Skanska is committed to revolutionizing healthcare construction by delivering innovative facilities that cater to the unique needs and demands of the local community,” said Tracy Hunt, senior vice president of Skanska’s Florida operations. “As the Central Florida region continues to expand, the need for new, additional healthcare facilities or improvements to existing systems is critical, and Skanska looks forward to continuing its role in improving Florida’s healthcare sector.”

“Orlando Health loves working in concert with physicians that see beyond themselves. These physicians dreamed and designed every inch of the facility to improve the care and service to their patients. It is wonderful to see their vision come true for the people across the southeastern United States and beyond,” said Orlando Health president and CEO David Strong about the project.

The Orlando Health Jewett Institute was designed by architecture firm Page Southerland Page, Inc. and is a collaborative project between Jewett Orthopedic Clinic and Orlando Health.
