One killed in multi-vehicle accident on I-4

A 65-year-old woman was killed while she was traveling on Interstate 4 after her car was rear-ended by another vehicle and then t-boned by a Jeep.

The fatal accident took place on I-4, near mile marker 59, at around 4:18 a.m. on Saturday, October 7.

According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 65-year-old woman from Lutz was driving a 2006 Kia Sportage eastbound on I-4, approaching mile marker 59 in the center lane.

At the time, a 30-year-old Lakeland man was driving his 2015 Subaru WRX directly behind the woman’s Kia.

Officials say the man “failed to observe” the Kia ahead, causing his Subaru to crash with the back of the Kia. After the impact, the Subaru ran off the left side of the roadway and onto the median before colliding with the center guardrail.

The impact caused the Kia to rotate clockwise and come to a stop across the center and outside lane.

Shortly after the initial collision, a 39-year-old Apopka man who was driving a 2010 Jeep Wrangler failed to observe the scene. As a result, the front of the Jeep collided with the left side of the Kia. The impact forced the Kia into the center median, causing it to collide with the center guardrail.

The Lutz woman was transported to Celebration Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

The Apopka man was transported to Osceola Regional Medical Center with minor injuries. His passenger, a 38-year-old Orlando woman, was transported to the same hospital with serious injuries.

The Lakeman man was uninjured in the crash.
