21-year-old woman killed in Turnpike accident

A 21-year-old woman was killed and several other people were seriously injured in a two-car accident on Florida’s Turnpike this morning.

The fatal accident took place at around 4:55 a.m. on Monday, October 9 near mile marker 202 of the Turnpike in Osceola County.

According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 21-year-old Haines City Man was driving a 2023 Hyundai Elantra northbound on the inside lane of the roadway. As the vehicle approached mile marker 202, authorities say it was driving above the posted speed limit and failed to observe a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder ahead.

As a result, the Hyundai collided with the Nissan, rotated right, and was struck once more by the Nissan before it was sent into the left, inside grass shoulder. The vehicle overturned onto its right side and collided with the left median guardrail.

A passenger in the Hyundai, a 21-year-old woman from Winter Haven, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and two other passengers, a 26-year-old Haines City woman and a 21-year-old Lakeland woman, were transported to Osceola Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

The driver of the Nissan, a 37-year-old man from Dalton, Georgia, and four of his passengers were not injured in the crash. A fifth passenger, an 11-year-old child from Dalton, Georgia, received minor injuries in the crash.
