Roaches, improperly stored foods lead to closure of pizzeria on east Colonial Drive

A pizzeria in east Orlando was forced to temporarily close its doors after a health inspector cited it for multiple code violations, including the presence of roaches and foods that were being stored improperly.

Papa Gio’s of Chuluota was forced to close on Tuesday, November 14, after failing a health inspection conducted by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation.

The restaurant, which is located at 16869 E Colonial Drive in Orlando, was cited for approximately 16 violations, including six considered “high priority,” according to the FDBPR report.

Among the violations was the presence of roach activity, as evidenced by eight dead and five living roaches found throughout the kitchen during the inspection.

The inspector also found that the restaurant was storing raw chicken over cooked chicken in a walk-in cooler, as well as raw veal over stuffed shells in a tall, reach-in freezer.

The report also indicates that a stop sale was issued for garlic oil that was kept at too high of a temperature after it was measured at 84 degrees Fahrenheit.

The restaurant was reinspected on Wednesday, November 15, and met inspection standards with only one basic violation found.

Papa Gio’s has passed multiple inspections in 2023 and 2022, dating back to last August. The restaurant failed separate inspections in June and August 2022.
