Gregory English, 90, passed away peacefully at his residence in Winter Park, FL, on Wednesday, June 8, 2022, surrounded by his family.
A true New Yorker, Gregory grew up in a loving Greek community in Washington Heights. In 1951, he met the love of his life, Mary, and the two moved to Maspeth, NY. They raised their family in Greenlawn, NY, where he played an active role in the St. Paraskevi Greek Orthodox Church community. On Long Island, he enjoyed driving his Cadillac Coupe de Ville and sailing the Long Island Sound on his sailboat named AGAPE.
Gregory had a successful banking career in Manhattan and was fortunate to see much of the world through his business travels. He retired from J.P. Morgan Chase, but never stopped dabbling in the stock market. He loved to check his numbers each morning over coffee, using his laptop which he referred to as his “machine.”
He and Mary were snowbirds for several years, splitting their time between Maspeth and Sand Key, FL. While in Florida, Gregory kept busy taking long walks on the beach, golfing with friends, swimming in the Gulf of Mexico, and watching sunsets from under the tiki huts. He also served on the board of his condo building. He always enjoyed ending his day with a Scotch in hand and listening to Andrea Bocelli.
Gregory was a strong patriarch of his family and a loyal and trustworthy friend to all. He was extraordinarily supportive and generous, and helped his children and grandchildren become independent adults. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather who was loving and proud, and he will be missed by all who knew him.
He is preceded in death by his mother and father, Mary and James English, and his brother Peter English. Gregory leaves behind his wife Mary of 68 years, daughter Callie and husband Russell, of Memphis, TN, son James and his wife Jennifer, of St. Louis, MO, and son Michael and his wife Nancy, of Winter Park, FL. Gregory was cherished by his seven grandchildren: Stacie, Greg, Haley, Michael, Austin, Christopher, and Mariel. He will be sorely missed by his faithful West Highland Terrier, Sophia.
Gregory will be celebrated with a funeral service at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Tuesday, June 14, 2022, at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to a charity of your choice or to enjoy a special sunset in his honor.
