1 killed, 1 injured in wrong-way crash on I-4 in Orlando

The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a wrong-way crash on Interstate 4 in Orlando that left one person dead, and another injured, on Tuesday morning.

At around 5:35 a.m., an FHP trooper was stationary at the intersection of Sand Lake Road and the I-4 westbound exit ramp when a 2016 Nissan Sentra was observed making a right turn onto the ramp, according to a preliminary report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

FHP stated that the Nissan began traveling the wrong way on the exit ramp, and the trooper quickly followed the vehicle in an attempt to stop it. Moments later, a 2011 Jeep Wrangler began heading westbound on the same ramp towards Sand Lake Road.

The driver and sole occupant of the Nissan, a 21-year-old man from Orlando, failed to stop, and his vehicle proceeded to crash head-on into the Jeep. He sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Jeep’s driver and sole occupant, a 53-year-old Orlando woman, was transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The report stated that her condition was “serious.”

The names of the drivers involved in the crash were not released by the Florida Highway Patrol.

The accident has caused delays on Tuesday due to a roadblock that was put in place on the I-4 westbound exit ramp to Sand Lake Road.
