Walgreens to cut over 300 jobs as Orlando distribution center closes

Walgreens is permanently shutting down its distribution center in Orlando and laying off more than 300 employees at the facility.

Earlier this month, Walgreens made the announcement in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) filing with the Florida Department of Commerce.

Walgreens stated that after a “careful review” of its operations, the company has made the “difficult decision” to close its Orlando distribution center, which is located at 2455 Premier Row.

According to Walgreens, “employment separations” are expected to commence on or around May 17, 2024. Among those scheduled for layoff are 324 employees from the distribution center in Orlando.

The filing shows that on March 14, 2024, all affected employees were given a 60-day notice of their termination. Those affected will continue to receive their full compensation and benefits for the entire 60-day period or until they resign, whichever occurs first.

In addition, Walgreens stated that the affected employees will have the opportunity to participate in on-site career fairs and/or outplacement services to assist their transition to other employment.

The affected employees are not represented by a union and have no bumping rights, according to the filing.
