Deputies: Man shot and killed during road rage incident in Volusia

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a road rage incident that turned deadly after shots were fired on Thursday night.

At around 9:10 p.m., VCSO deputies responded to the area of Fisher Drive and Leland Drive in Deltona after receiving multiple 911 calls regarding a shooting, according to the sheriff’s office.

When deputies arrived, they found one man deceased in the roadway. He was identified as 37-year-old Kenyon Ashley of Deltona.

The sheriff’s office stated that the man who fired the shots remained on scene. He spoke with investigators, providing his account of the events that led to the fatal shooting.

During that interview, the man advised that prior to the shooting, he had passed a white Dodge Charger that had slowed down in front of him on DeBary Avenue. Moments later, the Charger allegedly began following him closely with its high beams on.

The man told detectives that the Charger eventually “backed off,” and he continued heading toward his destination. However, when the man turned off Providence Boulevard onto Fisher Drive, the Charger reappeared and quickly accelerated.

The Charger then allegedly drove alongside the man before pulling in front of him to “cut him off.”

According to the man’s statement, the driver of the Charger, later identified as Ashley, exited the vehicle and approached him. Ashley was wielding a firearm, and he allegedly raised it toward the man while yelling at him.

The man was also armed at the time of the incident. He advised that he “feared for his life,” and he proceeded to fire several rounds at Ashley.

A witness in the area also spoke with investigators and provided a full account of the incident that “matched the shooter’s” statement.

Prior to shots being fired, the witness advised that the shooter repeatedly said something to the effect of, “I don’t want any problems.” Shortly after the shooting occurred, the witness stated that the shooter approached Ashley to check on him and attempt to render aid.

According to VCSO, detectives recovered several pieces of evidence from the scene, including two firearms, multiple shell casings and projectiles, and both vehicles.

The sheriff’s office contacted the State Attorney’s Office Homicide Investigation Unit to provide the initial findings of the investigation.

“It was determined that the evidence did not support any criminal charges at this time,” stated VCSO in a social media post. “The case remains active, and the State Attorney’s Office will review all the circumstances to make a final determination.”

The name of the shooter was not released by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
