County looking to outfit Tangelo Park with artwork

Orange County officials are looking to award nearly $30,000 to local artists for artwork to outfit Tangelo Park.

The Orange County Public Art Review Board is seeking one or more artists to develop artwork for the Tangelo Park Community Center to be constructed in Orlando.

The possibilities for public art include art embedded in walls, floors, or sidewalks, free-standing sculptures; kinetic sculptures, mosaics, and murals. The multipurpose room, gymnasium, poolside, garden and front lawn are all available to display pieces.

Approximately $29,100 has been approved for artwork, according to the county. This opportunity is open to professional artists working in any appropriate media. Student artists may apply if they can secure an experienced public artist to serve as a mentor to oversee their work.

Artists are responsible for artwork design, fabrication, materials, installation, insurance, travel, public presentations, meetings with Orange County staff as necessary, identification plaque, and all related incidental expenses.

The Tangelo Park Community Center is located located next to Tangelo Park Elementary School with an adjoining outdoor recreation center. The site includes an indoor gymnasium and an outdoor pool that will be renovated. The newly constructed community center will feature a multipurpose meeting space, classrooms and offices, while the outdoor spaces will have solar gazebos for community use.

According to county officials, the center’s main function will be to provide County social service programs and recreation, serving as a multigenerational gathering space. Officials hope the center will foster community growth through activities such as family events, farmer’s markets, art shows and festivals.
