Magic release schedule for highly-anticipated season

The Orlando Magic, whose roster will feature two #1 draft picks for the first time in decades, released its schedule for the upcoming season today.

The regular season will begin on the road in Detroit on October 19, when the team will square off against the Pistons and 2021 #1 pick Cade Cunningham.

The Magic’s first home game will come on October 22, when the team faces off against last year’s Eastern Conference Champions, the Boston Celtics.

The schedule features multiple marquee matchups during the first two weeks of the season, including games against the Knicks, Charlotte Hornets, and Dallas Mavericks, who are coming off their best playoff run since their first and only championship over a decade ago.

Just a few days later, the Magic will host the defending champion Golden State Warriors for their second home game of the season. During a podcast recording this summer, Warriors’ forward Draymond Green slighted the Magic’s defensive play in a passing remark, suggesting the Warriors were facing formidable opponents in the playoffs and not “the Orlando Magic.”

The game against Golden State is the first of seven games in row at home that will pit the Magic against some of the Western Conference’s best teams, including the Phoenix Suns and Minnesota Timberwolves.

While young, Orlando’s roster features eight players who were drafted in the top 8 of their respective draft classes, and a handful of others who were drafted in the first round. That includes #1 picks Paolo Banchero and Markelle Fultz, who will lead a team that has been plagued by injuries over the past several years.

Of note, the team’s average age is less than 24, which makes it the youngest team in the National Basketball Association this year.
