Over 3,000 monkeypox vaccinations administered in Orange County

Florida Department of Health Officials in Orange County have administered over 3,000 Monkeypox vaccinations in the past two months.

According to the FDOH, since the beginning of June, approximately 3,254 monkeypox vaccinations have been administered through the county’s appointment system.

Through the month of August, the department says it averaged around 100 appointments per day. Last week, nearly 1,500 appointments were scheduled.

Central Florida counties documented over 200 new cases of monkeypox in August, an increase of over 15 times the number of cases reported through the previous month.

According to the latest data available through the Florida Department of Health Reportable Diseases Frequency Report, the nine counties that comprise Central Florida reported 216 cases of monkeypox through August.

As of July 19, only 13 cases had been reported in Central Florida.

The state of Florida is reporting 1,991 cases, an increase of over 120 in the past week alone. Throughout the United States, nearly 20,000 cases have been reported since the beginning of the outbreak this summer.

In comparison, in June, around 200 cases were reported across the country.

The monkeypox virus produces similar symptoms to small pox, including fever, headache, muscle pain, chills and fatigue.

According to the CDC, symptoms of the monkeypox virus are generally more mild than in small pox cases. For more information on the monkeypox disease, visit the CDC monkeypox website.
