An elderly Fort Pierce man and woman were killed in Osceola County this morning after their vehicle struck another vehicle head-on while attempting to pass a semi-truck.
The incident took place around 9:22 a.m. near the intersection of State Road 60 and Peavine Road. According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 63-year-old Fort Pierce man was driving a 2017 Hyundai Elantra with a 62-year-old female passenger westbound on SR 60, just west of Peavine Road.
The man attempted to pass a semi-truck in a passing zone and entered the eastbound lane of the highway and into the direct path of a 2016 Ford F-150.
The driver of the Elantra was pronounced deceased on scene, while the female passenger was airlifted to Holmes Regional Hospital and later pronounced deceased.
The two occupants of the pickup truck, a 36-year-old Groveland man and a 37-year-old St. Petersburg man, received minor injuries in the crash.
All four individuals were wearing seatbelts, according to the FHP report.
