The first period of Florida’s Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday will wrap up later this week.
Consumers may purchase qualifying disaster preparedness supplies that are exempt from tax through Friday, June 9.
The list of exempt items includes dog or cat food, can openers, reusable ice, laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, dish soap, trash bags, portable self-powered light sources, smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, and dozens of other items.
The holiday does not apply to rental or repair of any of the qualifying items, nor does it apply to sales in a theme park, entertainment complex, public lodging establishment, or airport.
Passed by the Florida Legislature, the sales tax holiday began on Saturday, May 27. For those who are unable to make purchases before Friday, a second exemption period will begin on Saturday, August 26, and will extend through Friday, September 8.
