An Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputy shot a man who was allegedly holding a gun and pointing it at several residents at an apartment complex in Winter Park on Friday night.
At around 10:30 p.m., OCSO deputies responded to the Indigo Winter Park Apartments located on U.K. Circle after receiving reports that a man was threatening residents with a firearm, according to the sheriff’s office.
When deputies arrived on scene, they heard a single gunshot. Moments later, they encountered the man who was “still holding the gun.”
A deputy proceeded to fire their service weapon, striking the armed man. He fell to the ground, and deputies secured him while rendering aid.
The man was transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where he underwent surgery. His name was not released by the sheriff’s office.
The man’s firearm was recovered on scene.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the deputy-involved shooting, and its findings will be turned over to the State Attorney’s Office for review. Once this process has been completed, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office will then conduct its own internal investigation.
“The deputy that fired their weapon is on temporary, paid administrative leave pending the initial FDLE review,” stated OCSO early Saturday morning.
No further details were provided by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.
