62 people rescued from ferris wheel on I-Drive in Orlando

Dozens of people had to be rescued from a large ferris wheel along International Drive in Orlando over the weekend after the ride experienced a power failure.

The Wheel at ICON Park is currently closed for maintenance after 62 people were stranded on the ride on Saturday, December 31, in an apparent power failure.

Orange County Fire Rescue crews responded to the attraction, which is located at 8401 International Drive, at around 9 p.m. after reports of a power failure and people being stranded on the ride.

Crews climbed the ride and cleared more than 20 pods containing 62 passengers. No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, according to authorities.

Icon Park has closed the ride “for maintenance,” according to a statement posted to the company’s website.

It is the second ride closure at the park over the past year. In October, park officials announced the permanent closure of Orlando Freefall due to the death of 14-year-old Tyre Sampson, who was killed after he fell to his death from the top of the ride on March 24, 2022.
